I found my Reverse Dictionary last weekend in a box of precious books in the garage. One of those massive Readers Digest doorstop-sized books, it was a present from my lovely Dad to his fabulously geeky daughter in about 1995.

It’s like the helpful lovechild of a dictionary and a thesaurus, designed to help you find the words on the tip of your tongue – before Google existed.


So if you’re thinking of that thing that Debretts does, that’s a bit more specific than manners – you look up “manners” and you get this:


I love words and I love lists, so coming across its lists of words scattered throughout the tome made me rather happy as well.


It’s earned itself a place in my reference section for pure novelty value, and a way to broaden my knowledge and vocabulary – and I couldn’t resist sharing it!
